Dr. Andrea Malkin Brenner, sociologist and co-author of “How To College”, joins Lisa to share insights gained from her decades of work with college students at American University. By starting early while still in high school, her suggestions will help get both you and your student be ready for this major life transition.
Dr. Malkin Brenner directs your family to the many resources available to your child on campus and you’ll learn about first year experience (FYE) programs available at most universities to support your student. American University has a unique program different from other FYE’s and she’ll tell you why she create it to be different. By understanding this, you’ll know to research those outlets during campus visits and before high school graduation.

Dr. Andrea Malkin Brenner is a college transition educator and author who speaks frequently with high school students and parents on the challenges related to college transitions. She draws on her 25 years of experience as a sociology professor and college administrator, as the creator and director of American University’s first-year experience program, and as the faculty director of the college’s University College program. Andrea is the creator of the Talking College™ Card Deck, the original card deck of discussion prompts for college-bound students and their parents, and co-author of How to College: What to Know Before You Go (and When You’re There), a leading guide for college-bound high school students.
